THE HOWLIN' - The Howlin’s discovery sails alive as the band takes you by the hand on their musical journey, discovering different genres they all personally feel connected to. Some band members are passionate old skool Hip Hop fans, while others prefer Alternative above anything else. Besides that, they all agree to folk and rock. As for their own music, the question remains: what’s it going to be?

A little bit of all. Because let’s be honest, isn’t making a choice in this a little bit boring? And if you feel this sounds a little too much of an eclectic mix for your liking, you’ve obviously never heard a band like The Howlin’. They seem to connect on both a musical and spiritual level like pieces of a puzzlethat are just meant to form a whole (and that’s not cliché, because it’s true).

On their EP This Road The Howlin’ smartly combines their favourite music into a sound that typifies their vibe: modern – rough around the edges – soulful tunes with a raw, but sexy, twist. Comparable to the feeling you get when your secret crush finally gives that cheeky smile you’ve been longing to receive. It’s a small hint leading to all the feels. Aïcha Cherif - “Als Lianne La Havas en Jeff Buckley een kind zouden krijgen ...”, aldus de juryleden tijdens Kunstbende. Aïcha Cherif schrijft intense – dan weer ingetogen – songs met een sterk melancholisch karakter. 

Nadat Aïcha de landelijke finale van Kunstbende won met het nummer ‘Change’, ging ze in de zomer van 2016 aan de slag met een band en doken zij de studio in om hun eerste EP, getiteld ‘Change’, op te nemen. Hierna volgden optredens op festivals als Lowlands, Valkhof Festival, Zomerparkfeest, Cultura Nova, Bruis, Westergasfabriek Live XL en Bevrijdingsfestival Limburg. Daarnaast verzorgde Aïcha solo en met band de supports bij o.a. Trixie Whitley, Qeaux Qeaux Joans en Bettie Serveert.

LINE UP: Wasted Talent

Wasted Talent is a band from Delft. Their music fits somewhere between progressive metal and hardcore punk. Floaty ambient melodies alternate with complex riffs and heavy breakdowns. The vocals are part shouted, part screamed and part sung.

Banner. - Banner Man in 't Veld is een songwriter uit Den Haag. Op autodidactische wijze is hij op zijn veertiende begonnen met gitaarspelen en de geschreven nummers die voorheen verborgen bleven, werden op zijn achttiende uitgevoerd op kleine podia. Sindsdien speelde hij onder andere in Paradiso Amsterdam, Mezz Breda en Hedon Zwolle en werd hij door Rockstone Sessions uitgenodigd voor een showcase op Eurosonic Noorderslag 2017.

Banner. zijn muziek wordt gekenmerkt door creatieve fingerpicking. Na de indrukwekkende singles ‘Compass’ en ‘Howl’ presenteert Banner. nu zijn debuut EP ‘Over Blue’. Met zijn band klinkt Banner. groots, sfeervol en organisch zonder zijn oprechtheid te verliezen. Invloeden zoals Ben Howard, Fink, John Martyn en Nick Mulvey zijn te horen, maar ook het doet ook denken aan Radiohead, Pink Floyd en David Sylvian.

Rachman - Rachman maakt op papier een mengelmoes van Blues, Folk, Soul. Maar in werkelijkheid is er veel en veel meer aan de hand. Met veel liefde voor harmonie en melodie crëeert singer-songwriter/gitarist Rachman Tjahjono een tijdloze Sound waarbij 'het liedje' centraal staat (denk: Stevie Wonder, Fleet foxes, John mayer, Bill Whithers). Het resultaat? Muziek met een onderhoudende funky groove. Met sterke refreinen waarbij je het gevoel krijgt dat je wel mee MOET zingen. Muziek waarmee 'life itself' wordt gevierd, heel groots maar toch intiem.

The Cavern - Obscure rhythms and threatening guitar melodies support stories that seem to have sprung from the deepest darkest crevices. But yet there is a light at the entrance of this crevice, because despite the raw and uncompromising musical statement, The Cavern mainly wants to move people, comfort them and make them forget their sadness. It is exactly that contrast between light and darkness, loud and soft, friendly and grim that makes The Cavern such a special band.

It should be clear by now; The Netherlands has a new rock sensation in it’s team. Despite being named after the infamous Liverpool club where The Beatles started their career, they have more influences than just British guitar tradition. Vocalist and bass player Floortje van der Kooij, her guitar playing brother Pepijn and drummer Jeroen van Leeuwen are also inspired by contemporary acts such as The Queens of the Stone Age and The Kills.

After an intense collaboration with producer Youri de Bruijn their first achievement was born. A self-titled EP, released on the 10th of April 2015 online (Spotify, Itunes) and physically. With these 5 powerful songs The Cavern are currently touring and winning people’s hearts with their profound, alternative rock.

Toxic Online loved them, and gave them a 8/10. But the love didn’t stop there, as IndieZine, Radio Mortale and Pinguin Radio all can attest, who put them in their daily rotations. They were even selected for the ‘Popronde’, a concert tour throughout the Netherlands (40 cities) for promising new acts, where only 137 of the 1200 submitted acts were selected.

In November of 2015 their second single was released, The Lighthouse. The song explores the deepest caves within the human psyche, and has translated this to video with the help of Koen Dijkstra of the Creative Bros. The result was a stroboscopic trip throughout the chaos and anarchy that inhabits mankind's mind. 

2016 was a year full of writing, writing and writing for their upcoming release. In the meantime they have released a live rendition of 'I Know', a song about looking back on the past, and at the same time embracing the future. Pinguin Radio had the honor of premiering the clip, and it was picked up by several other media outlets such as DaMusic in Belgium.

Mantra - Scheurende gitaren afgewisseld met harmonieuze klanken en een rauwe zang: dat is Mantra. Een gecontroleerde psychedelische grungeband bestaande uit vier jeugdige, enthousiaste muzikanten. Begonnen in obscure kroegjes in Haarlem, werkte de band langzamerhand toe naar optredens in Paradiso, de Melkweg, Mainstage Bevrijdingspop en een uitverkochte Palmtra show in het Patronaat.
